REDWOOD CITY, Calif., November 6, 2001 – Centex Title and Insurance operations, a leading provider of insurance and escrow services to homes and businesses, announced today that it has successfully rebuffed the effects of a virulent Internet worm through use of Gilian Technologies' G-Server. An exit control solution that combats hacker sabotage by authenticating outgoing information, Gilian's G-Server is the first available product that proactively scrutinizes data leaving the Web server. Using digital signatures to verify the validity of the outbound flow of data, the G-Server steps in and replaces defaced material with the original. Thus, even though a worm may invade a site, the G-Server prevents the damage typically associated with such attacks, including transmitting the virus to those who browse the infected organization's site. Although full details of the attack were not disclosed because of security considerations, Centex confirmed that during the second week of October, the company's Web site was hacked and hit with one of the most infamous worms to ever proliferate on the Internet, called Nimda. Gilian's G-Server detected the hack and acted according to plan: continuing to send out the correct Web content so customers were neither denied access nor provided with inaccurate information. Simultaneously, the Centex Web team was activated in the middle of the night, repairing its site within two to three hours, with no impact on customer service. A subset of rogue computer technology sometimes called "malware," worms typically use a wide variety of techniques in their attempts to damage users' files and spread themselves across the Web. In fact, Nimda was the first so-called "Internet worm," attempting to modify Web sites to spread itself. The Gilian G-Server prevented Nimda from causing any damage at Centex Title and Insurance. Besides implementing preventive technology, Centex also isolates its Web servers, to ensure that any viruses that might reach them do not propagate to other mission critical systems. Centex Title and Insurance is a subsidiary of Centex Corp. [NYSE: CTX], a Fortune 500 company "As a company committed to excellence in our online operations, Centex cannot afford to have its Web site disseminating inaccurate or potentially damaging information," said Dianne Clifton, director of corporate marketing at Centex Corporation. "Gilian's G-Server ensured that false or misleading information wasn't posted on the Web site, thus maintaining an accurate outflow of information while reducing our own liability exposure. The G-Server passed its first test with flying colors." Tim Hough, CIO at Centex Title and Insurance, said, "Hack attacks are becoming more and more common, and when the perimeter is breached, we need technology solutions to defeat worms and other types of malware. During an incursion, the G-Server continued to original data to users, and they remain oblivious to any breach. Even more impressive, the G-Server is stealthy: its IP invisibility prevents intruders from detecting the system on our network. We win, hackers lose." Centex last year was designated by Salomon Smith Barney as one of the top 10 Internet savvy companies. "Customers expect certain things of Internet-savvy companies," said Rafael Feitelberg, CEO of Gilian Technologies. "Centex Title and Insurance has demonstrated this commitment by protecting its own resources, as well as its customers, from the effects of Internet worms. Gilian is proud to be a part of the solution and we are honored to be doing business with such a forward-thinking customer."
